Darent Valley Hospital gets ‘Tuffie’ on infection
Cleanliness Improved

Darent Valley - Committed to Tuffie 5
Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust has introduced the new Tuffie 5 wipe across the entire Darent Valley Hospital site.
Rod Rothwell, Senior Charge Nurse Infection, Prevention and Control at Darent Valley Hospital said "After reviewing the data from a previous trial at another NHS Trust, we were encouraged and impressed by the performance of the new wipe. It has shown to be effective against the five major groups of pathogens, including spores such as C.diff which conventional alcohol based wipes cannot eradicate.
"The Tuffie 5 wipe was trialled on a couple of our wards here at Darent Valley with good positive results and obtained great feedback from staff. Cleanliness improved and staff found the product very easy to use".
Darent Valley Hospital now uses Tuffie 5 wipes on hard surface equipment such as beds, lockers and commodes. In an attempt to eradicate cross-infection, the Trust also introduced a standardised cleaning process for commode cleansing that every ward could follow. This was combined with a poster campaign on how to dismantle the commode to ensure a total clean after each and every patient use.
This is part of a wider cleanliness campaign at the hospital to help it succeed in its ongoing fight against infection. Staff also use the Vernacare indicator tape which is placed across the arms of the commode, then dated and signed to show that the commode has been cleaned in line with the hospital's hygiene standards.
Tuffie 5 eradicates pathogens on initial impact, but industry tests show that its sanitising properties continue to work after cleaning has taken place.
