    Bolton-based Vernacare has won a major healthcare industry award for its pioneering work in bringing valuable new infection prevention products to market. The company, which has been innovating in Bolton since the early 1960s, started out using waste paper from the Bolton News to develop single-use pulp products that would save nurses time. This 'Vernacare System' of human waste management in healthcare is now a best practice method that is helping to prevent infection and boost environmental and cost performance at hospitals worldwide.

    Why green means clean at Mid Essex

    A ‘green ribbon’ symbolises how serious Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust is about infection prevention. Between the discharge of one patient and the admission of another, nursing staff thoroughly clean the bed space, including the furniture, and make up the bed. When this has been done, they place a ‘green ribbon’, or tape across the turned down top sheet on the bed – sealing it and then adding their signature and date of the clean. This procedure is also followed each time a commode is cleaned.

    Carmarthenshire works to wipe out infection

    The Carmarthenshire division of Hywel Dda NHS Trust is targeting infection prevention with hard hitting measures, including introducing the new Tuffie 5 wipe that eradicates the major five major groups of pathogens such as clostridium difficile (C.diff), MRSA and E. Coli. The powerful new Tuffie 5 wipe from infection control products manufacturer Vernacare was trialled on a medical ward at West Wales General Hospital, in Carmarthen.

    Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust has introduced the new Tuffie 5 wipe across the entire Darent Valley Hospital site. Rod Rothwell, Senior Charge Nurse Infection, Prevention and Control at Darent Valley Hospital said “After reviewing the data from a previous trial at another NHS Trust, we were encouraged and impressed by the performance of the new wipe. It has shown to be effective against the five major groups of pathogens, including spores such as C.diff which conventional alcohol based wipes cannot eradicate.
