Queen congratulates Vernacare on product innovation
Vernacare's achievement in developing the world's first detergent proof disposable wash bowl was recognised by Her Majesty the Queen during a visit to Buckingham Palace by directors of the infection prevention products manufacturing business. Earlier this year Vernacare was announced as a winner of the prestigious Queen's Award for Enterprise for its innovative wash bowl, and directors were invited to a special winners' ceremony in July, hosted by the Queen.The unique single-use pulp wash bowl was developed with help from NHS clinicians to meet demand from infection prevention nurses who identified that re-using plastic wash bowls without properly cleaning and drying was a significant infection risk. The wash bowl is used by more than a third of NHS Hospitals and hospitals across the globe for hand washing, general surface cleaning, wound care, shaving, continence and patient care.

Vernacare goes green to reduce costs
Vernacare has reduced the cost of its Tuffie range of cleaning and disinfecting wipes by up to 30%, through introducing new ‘greener’ flexible packaging. Both Tuffie Detergent and Tuffie 5 wipes are now available in flexible space-saving canisters made from flexible material that is 70% lighter than traditional tubs. Soft refill packs and new wall-mounted dispensers have also been developed. “By using significantly less packaging we reduce both manufacturing and transport costs, meaning we can pass that financial saving on to customers”, said Chris Socratous, Vernacare Product Manager. “Customers also consume less packaging and can fold the cartons flat to reduce the cost and environmental impact of waste management.”

The national engineering team is dedicated to commissioning, servicing and maintaining all brands of macerators, including its own market leading systems, manufactured in the UK by Vernacare for almost 50 years. “In the service industry an 85% first-time-fix rate would be judged as excellent, so we are delighted with our performance, which has been above 95% for the past six months,” said Michael Whitehead, National Service Manager for Vernacare Technical Services.

All visitors to the stand were invited to share their top tips on hospital hygiene in comic style, with hundreds joining in the light-hearted challenge.

A ‘green ribbon’ symbolises how serious Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust is about infection prevention. Between the discharge of one patient and the admission of another, nursing staff thoroughly clean the bed space, including the furniture, and make up the bed. When this has been done, they place a ‘green ribbon’, or tape across the turned down top sheet on the bed – sealing it and then adding their signature and date of the clean. This procedure is also followed each time a commode is cleaned.

The Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust has replaced plastic bedpans at its Wonford Hospital with a green and hygienic alternative that saves staff time.
